Guiseppe Verdi (1913- 1901) became the musical voice of a nation. His gift for stirring melody and tragic and heroic situations struck a chord in an Italy struggling for freedom and unity, causes with which he was sympathetic. This trio of operatic delights features Placido Domingo and Renata Bruson in Ernani, Verdi's tragic opera based on Victor Hugo's violent and somber play-- Othello, which is Domingo's signature role and also features the talents of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa-- and Un Ballo in Maschero, Verdi's grand romantic opera filmed at the Royal Opera House.
